追求聲名的人必然會危害其自身，廣積財富的人必然會給后代帶來災禍。行善作惡遲遲得不到報應，并不是上天疏忽大意，而是上天想成全君子而滅掉小人。災禍和福祚是上天用來表示慈愛之心的手段，就像雷雨雪霜一樣，都是為了培育滋養(yǎng)萬物。所以君子擔心有災禍便恭敬戒懼，小人得了便宜便忘了危險。君子害怕禍來反而會招來福祉，小人以疏忽之心看待福祉反而會招來災禍，這就是《左傳》所說的「禍福沒有定數，全由各人自召」。
