不可學、不可事而在人者謂之性，可學而能、可事而成之在人者謂之偽。是性、偽之分也。
荀子所說的“偽”，是“人為”的意思。天生就有的是“性”，是人力無法改變的；通過后天的學習、努力可以改變的，就是“偽”。所以荀子主張“化性起偽”，通過自己能掌控的力量來改變已成定數(shù)的東西。
