子貢曰:“貧而無(wú)諂,富而無(wú)驕,何如?”子曰:“可也。未若貧而樂(lè),富而好禮者也。”子貢曰:“云:‘如切如磋,如琢如磨’,其斯之謂與?”子曰:“賜也,始可與言已矣,告諸往而知來(lái)者?!?
【譯文】 子貢說(shuō):“貧窮卻不阿諛?lè)畛校毁F卻不狂妄自大,怎樣?”孔子說(shuō):“可以。不如窮得有志氣,富得有涵養(yǎng)的人?!弊迂曊f(shuō):“修養(yǎng)的完善,如同玉器的加工:切了再磋,琢了再磨,對(duì)吧?”孔子說(shuō):“子貢啊,現(xiàn)在可以與你談詩(shī)了。說(shuō)到過(guò)去,你就知道未來(lái)?!?/div>
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
